I Built an AI Companion for People in Conflict
Why the help you need at 2am shouldn't cost $200 or take 3 weeks
When you're in a fight with someone you love at 2am, who do you call?
Not your therapist -- that appointment is three weeks out, and by the time you're sitting in their office, you're reconstructing the argument from memory in a sterile room. The moment has passed.
Not your friends -- they love you, so they take your side. That feels good temporarily, but nothing changes. And you exhaust them.
Not Google -- "5 tips for better communication" doesn't land when you're crying at 2am.
Most people do nothing. They sit with it. Stew. The conflict festers. Resentment compounds.
I know because I watch it happen for a living.
The Problem I Couldn't Unsee
I work in reality TV. The kind where real couples navigate real conflict on camera. I've seen more broken relationships in the past few years than most therapists see in a decade.
And here's the pattern I kept seeing: the moment someone needs help is never the moment help is available.
Therapy costs $200+/hour. Waitlists are weeks long. 85% of people who need mental health support never receive it. Not because they don't want it -- because the system isn't built for the 2am moment.
So I Built Something
During the Claude Code Hackathon in February 2026, I built Parallax. 42 pull requests. 500+ commits. One week.
The core idea: an AI companion who listens, remembers your story across sessions, and helps you see what you can't see about yourself.
Her name is Ava.
What Ava Does
Solo Mode: Someone to Talk To
You talk to Ava like you'd talk to a friend -- except she doesn't take sides, doesn't get tired, and doesn't forget. She remembers what you told her last week. She builds a behavioral profile through conversation. Over time, she surfaces patterns: blind spots, unmet needs, triggers, attachment style.
This is the front door. Most people come alone first. They need to process before they can talk.
The Melt: What You Actually Meant
The most powerful feature is a visual transformation that dissolves defensive language into the feeling underneath.
"You never listen" becomes "When I share something important and don't feel heard, I feel invisible."
That shift changes everything. It's the level of self-awareness that used to require months of therapy.
Conflict Mediation: Bring Someone In
When you're ready, you can bring the other person into a mediation session. Same room or connected by a room code. Ava sits between you, analyzing each message through 19 validated frameworks -- NVC, Gottman, CBT, attachment theory, and more.
No sides. Just clarity.
Academy of Self
Psychoeducational articles written in Ava's voice. Not generic advice -- context-aware reading that Ava suggests based on what's coming up in your conversations.
The Technical Bet
Most AI therapy tools use one framework (usually CBT). Ava uses 19. Conflict Intelligence runs every message through Gottman, NVC, CBT, attachment theory, drama triangle analysis, SCARF model, and 13 more validated lenses simultaneously.
Most chatbots are stateless. Ava has persistent cross-session memory. You never start from zero.
Most AI companions are entertainment (Replika) or clinical (the now-dead Woebot). Ava is neither -- she's a mirror for self-awareness and a bridge for real conversation.
The upper-left quadrant of the market -- high personalization, conflict-focused -- is empty. That's where Parallax lives.
What's Live
Parallax is live at tryparallax.space with real billing.
- Free tier: 25 Ava messages + 1 conflict session per month
- Pro ($14.99/mo): 300 Ava messages + 15 sessions
- Premium ($29.99/mo): Unlimited everything
Less than a single therapy copay per month for Pro. And the free tier is generous enough to experience the mirror moment.
Why This Matters
The online couples therapy market will hit $26.6B by 2028. But the real opportunity isn't in that market -- it's in the 85% of people who will never enter it.
Not because they don't want help. Because help wasn't there when they needed it.
Parallax doesn't replace therapy. It replaces the silence.
tryparallax.space -- someone to talk to.
